Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, a time when tradition teaches us that the world itself is renewed, begins this evening. Ten days from now we will gather again for Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement. The days that connect the two are known as the Days of Teshuvah, which literally translates to “return.” Teshuvah is about more than reflection and atonement; it is about returning to our truest, deepest selves, recognizing that tomorrow can be even better than today.

In many ways, our JCC is a place of teshuvah. Each time someone walks through our doors — whether to strengthen their body in the fitness center, to nourish their soul through arts and culture, or to nurture their children in our Early Childhood Education center or afterschool program — they are seeking renewal, growth, and connection. The JCC offers a daily opportunity to “return” to what matters most: belonging, community, and shared purpose.

Our tradition teaches that each person is created in the image of G-d and inherently good. In this season, we are called not only to reflect inward but also to build outward — to strengthen the spaces and communities that allow each of us to flourish. This is the holy work of our JCC: to be a place of belonging, growth, and renewal for every person who walks through our doors.

As we welcome 5786 together, may this year be one of health, joy, peace, and a focus on the connections that sustain us. May it be a year of renewed purpose for our JCC — a year of building community, deepening Jewish life, and bringing more light into the world.
