Shabbat Shalom from Sam: Tell Us Your “Why”

For the past 18 months, I’ve had the honor of telling stories — stories about our JCC, community, and the people who make it what it is.

Some of those stories have been yours. And they’ve stayed with me. But the truth is, I know they are only a small glimpse.

Because every single day, within these walls, there are hundreds of moments I don’t see. Connections I don’t hear. Journeys I don’t fully know. And yet, I feel them — I see them in passing, in the energy of a class, in a smile exchanged in the hallway, in the quiet ways people show up for one another.

I am inspired by those unseen stories every single day. And lately, I’ve been especially moved by several of our staff members who have been leaning into that same feeling. They’ve been asking questions, listening closely, and genuinely wanting to understand something simple but profound: Why do people love the J? Why do they choose to be here?

It’s such a human question — and an important one for many reasons.

Our JCC is not just defined by what we offer. Our JCC is defined by each of our individual stories, and together we have a meaningful, rich, and beautiful story to tell. So much so that we have “storytelling” as a key pillar of our recently completed strategic plan.

So today, I want to ask you, from a place of real curiosity and care:

Why do you choose the J?

Maybe it’s about belonging or even about routine, or healing, or friendship. Maybe it’s something you’ve never quite put into words before.

Whatever it is, it matters. Your story helps us understand who we are. It helps us grow with intention. And it reminds all of us that this is more than a building — it’s a community shaped by the people inside it.

If you’re willing, I would truly love to hear your story. I know that at times telling your personal story can be hard, and we deeply appreciate the trust you place in us. You can reply to this email or feel free to stop me in the hallway.

Thank you for being part of this community — and for all the stories, told and untold, that make it so meaningful.

Shabbat Shalom,

Sam Dubrinsky – JCC Indy CEO
