Like many Jewish holidays, Purim commemorates the miraculous survival of the Jewish people in the face of persecution. It marks the downfall of Haman, a high-ranking official in the Persian Empire who plotted to destroy the Jewish population. Today, Purim is celebrated with various meaningful traditions, including reading the Book of Esther, which tells the story of this remarkable deliverance. The holiday also emphasizes acts of kindness, such as giving monetary gifts to at least two people in need, sharing food or gifts with others, and gathering for a joyous feast filled with merriment and gratitude.
Passover, one of the most meaningful Jewish holidays, begins at sundown on Sunday, April 13, and continues through Sunday, April 20. It’s a time for family gatherings, retelling the story of the Exodus, and enjoying traditional Seder meals. Reflect on themes of freedom, renewal, and heritage with JCC Indianapolis.
