Benefits of Balance Exercise
- Strengthens the bones and muscles.
- Reduces the likelihood of a person developing obesity, heart disease, diabetes, and some cancers.
- Decreases the risk of falls and functional limitations.
- Increases a person’s chance of living longer.
- Lowers risk of depression, anxiety, and insomnia because regular exercise enhances brain health, which helps maintain thinking skills.
- Social engagement is another lifestyle practice that plays an essential role in health. As social isolation can contribute to the decline in functional abilities and severe illness, developing social relationships may reduce these risks.
Regular exercise for seniors has multiple health and mental benefits.

About the Instructors
Mary Anna Hunt became certified in SilverSneakers (Classic and Circuit), BOOM, Fitness (for arthritis), Tai Chi, and LiveStrong (for cancer survivors) after being disappointed in how tenderly retirees tended to be treated at several different workout facilities. Balance is one of her favorite and most rewarding classes – “we are staying young longer!”
Fitness Is a Core Jewish Value
At the JCC, fitness classes aren’t just something we do; it’s who we are. Although exercise is not mentioned in the Torah, taking care of one’s health is. In fact, while other belief systems advocate for the healing power of prayer, Judaism encourages people to look after their health and seek counsel from medical experts. In Judaism, good health is not a goal in itself; rather, it is a means to an end – to serve the Creator.
We offer classes and options for exercise the way you want it, whether you’re a do-it-yourselfer or looking for expert advice and/or someone to hold you accountable. It all starts with you.
