The War of Yom Kippur 1973

Written by Lynne, oldest grandchild of Hertzel Tzadok and daughter of JCC Member Shirley Tzadok Alkobi (Mar 21, 2018) During Yom Kippur 1973 when my Grandpa Hertzel Tzadok finished praying and came home, he was summoned to go and fight in a war. When he found out about this he was 22 years old. He was very surprised and no one in Israel thought they had this coming. My grandpa thought of this war as a very traumatic experience and a hard experience because of all the deaths and bombs. He traveled with other soldiers to the south to stop the Egyptian soldiers from coming any further into Israel. Meanwhile other soldiers from Syria came in from the north and other soldiers from Israel stopped them from coming in too. The Egyptians crossed the body of water and entered the property of Israel and conquered some Jewish soldiers. Jewish soldiers succeeded in stopping the Egyptians and Syrians for about two days. Arik Sharon and his soldiers crossed the body of water and got to the other side where about 12,000 Egyptian soldiers were and they surrounded them. Henri Cesinger the minister of the U.S. at the time, talked to the rulers of Egypt, Syria and Israel to end the war. After about 4 months they decided to end the war and send all the soldiers home. (Yadenu Haita Al Haelyona) In the end Israel won the war even when the Egyptians and Syrians had over 4 million more soldiers. This just goes to say that the amount of people doesn’t determine who will win, rather the amount of belief in the people fighting the war.
